TransPRK

What is TransPRK?

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) was the first laser method used to correct refractive error, and is still the preferred choice for some patients.

PRK treats less corneal tissue so is the preferred method when the corneas are too thin for LASIK, if there are problems with the surface of the cornea, or if there are superficial scars present. The visual recovery is slower and a bit more uncomfortable than LASIK, and requires a contact lens to be worn for up to a week post-operatively to protect the cornea as it heals post-operatively. However, the long-term visual results are similar to LASIK.

TransPRK is the latest method of PRK, performed with the Schwind 1050RS excimer laser. It is a bladeless, all-laser approach, using the laser to gently remove the epithelial cells and perform the laser correction, in one step.

Benefits include:

  • Safe and proven technology with high success rates and low risk

  • Quick day surgery procedure

  • No creation of a flap in the cornea

  • Can treat thinner corneas and/or surface issues

  • Slower visual recovery but long-term visual outcomes are excellent, similar to LASIK
